Pet Peeves - Part 1

I am going to start the blog with my pet peeves which have been bothering me for quite some time now….

The first one is about the ready-made garments that are available in India. Here Ready-made doesn’t mean you can walk out of the store wearing it. I got to know a lot of things while hunting for clothes for myself. The first observation was that girls in India are seven feet tall. Invariably all the garments are stitched very long and the standard reply when questioned is that it can be altered :). After spending so much in establishing fashion institutes, sadly no ready-made kurta is made for a pear shaped body although i see a lot of those species all around me. A small size Kurta in womenswear is small at the top and really narrows down at the bottom !!!!!!. So if you are small at the top you should not have any behind :). Although I see most of the Indian women are heavy or wider around the hips but all the Kurtis are stitched for western body shapes WHY !!!!!!!!!!!.

Our Government spends a lot of money in setting up these fashion Technology institutes and they cannot design a single piece clothing for the Indian Body type !!! They cannot even come up with sizing guideline for Indian. People in other parts of the world would be shocked to hear the notion of “Free Size “, that exists in India. Somehow the free size garment is supposed to fit anyone from a petite to a tall person in length and also a slim to a hefty person !!!!!. A Design Miracle indeed!

I did not know that women in India were all B cup or above in size. And the bigger the breast the more padding you require to make it look humongous!!!! Even Big branded stores don’t sell “A” cups bras. I often wonder what the girl at the counter must be wearing as she herself must be the same size as me. I also learnt that smaller busts do not need padding at all.!!!!!!

Try going to any grocery store in the afternoon, they make you feel so unwelcome. The staff is still arranging things on the shelf and air-conditioning is always off, no matter how hot it is outside. Only one checkout counter will be open even if there is a big queue. They make it clear that the customers during the day time who actually buy more, need no service. When you ask for more cashiers to be on duty, they are bewildered as to "who is this shopping during our Lunch Time ?"

All youngsters and able bodied people in India love to take the elevators in the mall, thus making it difficult for the handicapped or older people or mothers with children and strollers to get an elevator. Why can't the youngsters use the escalators ????. Its perplexing for me really.

I never knew that ladies in India were all so fair skinned !!! Another irritant for me is when I try to buy a compact - There is hardly any shade available for the dusky beauties. The salesgirl will always push you to buy the a shade lot lighter than your skin. WHY ??? Every time I have to warn them -  I want a shade matching my skin tone. I don’t want to look bleached, fair and lovely !

I often wonder what the MBAs in the marketing arena and product designing are doing ????
